HiCC received a call from a concerned customer in Edward, N3, who was facing a serious problem after having their carpet cleaned by another carpet cleaning company.
The carpet had been cleaned around four days earlier, but the edges and corners were still noticeably damp. By this point, a strong, unpleasant musty smell had developed and spread throughout the room.
The odour had become so severe that the family could no longer use the room. They had closed the door and temporarily moved upstairs instead.
With a young child in the house, the situation was particularly concerning. The customer had already contacted the original carpet cleaning company, but unfortunately, they were told that there was nothing they could do and that drying the carpet was the customer’s responsibility.
That's when the customer contacted HiCC for help.
Step 1: Assessing the Problem
When HiCC arrived at the property, the strong musty smell was immediately noticeable. Although the carpet was no longer soaking wet, there was still a significant amount of residual moisture around the edges and corners.
Under normal circumstances, a professionally cleaned carpet should dry within a reasonable period, depending on factors such as ventilation, temperature, humidity and the cleaning method used. In this case, however, the carpet was still noticeably damp after four days.
The priority was therefore to tackle the remaining moisture rather than simply attempting to mask the odour.
Step 2: Removing the Remaining Moisture
HiCC first used professional extraction equipment to remove as much of the remaining moisture as possible from the affected areas. The team concentrated particularly on the perimeter and corners of the carpet, where moisture had remained trapped. This step was essential because treating the smell without addressing the underlying moisture would only provide a temporary solution.
Step 3: Applying a Specialist Moisture-Absorbing Treatment
After extracting the excess moisture, HiCC applied a specialist moisture-absorbing powder around the affected edges and corners. A deodorising treatment was also applied to help tackle the strong musty odour that had developed. Rather than removing the powder immediately, the customer was advised to leave it in place and allow it enough time to absorb the remaining moisture.
The Result: A Major Improvement Within 24 Hours
HiCC initially advised the customer to leave the treatment for at least 18 hours. After 24 hours, the customer got back in touch with HiCC. The difference was dramatic. The strong musty smell had disappeared, and the customer was extremely happy with the result, describing the improvement as almost like a “miracle.”
Most importantly, the family could use the room again. HiCC also advised the customer not to vacuum the powder too early. Allowing it to remain in place for the recommended period gave it more time to absorb the residual moisture before being vacuumed away.
Why Moisture Management Matters After Carpet Cleaning
This case demonstrates that professional carpet cleaning is not simply about how clean a carpet looks immediately after the service. Moisture management is an important part of the process.
When a carpet remains damp for an extended period, particularly around edges and corners where moisture can become trapped, it can contribute to unpleasant musty odours and make the room uncomfortable to use.
For this customer, the issue went far beyond appearance. Their family had effectively lost the use of an entire room in their home. By identifying the underlying moisture problem and treating it directly, HiCC was able to help restore the room rather than simply covering up the smell.
The Takeaway
What began as a carpet cleaning issue had left a family in Edward unable to use one of the rooms in their home for several days. The solution was not simply another round of cleaning. The priority was to remove the remaining moisture, treat the affected areas and give the moisture-absorbing treatment enough time to work.
Within 24 hours, the customer reported a dramatic improvement in the odour and was able to use the room again.
For HiCC, this case highlights an important aspect of professional carpet care: a carpet isn’t necessarily fully taken care of just because it looks clean. Proper moisture management can be just as important as the cleaning itself.
